Before you read on: This playlist is best listened to with hair on your face and caution thrown to the wind.
The time of year for loud bikes, leather vests and long whiskers is coming as Republic of Texas Biker Rally roars into Austin on Thursday. In honor of ROT’s annual return, we’ve compiled a playlist of songs all about being a rebel and embracing freedom on the open road. We’re calling it “Feel the Wind In Your Beard.”
Of course, when people think of cruising down the highway on two wheels, they first think of 1969 road flick “Easy Rider” and songs like “Born To Be Wild” by Steppenwolf, “The Weight” by The Band and Roger McGuinn’s “Ballad of Easy Rider.” All of your favorite outlaw jams are also here, including “Runnin’ Down a Dream” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, “Wanted Dead Or Alive” by Bon Jovi and “Like a Rolling Stone” by Bob Dylan.
This year, ROT Rally’s accompanying music schedule brings headliner Sammy Hagar to the Travis County Expo Center on Saturday. It’s only natural that you get revved up to “I Can’t Drive 55.” Austin360 will also present a lineup of mostly local acts in the Statesman’s west parking lot, including headliners Los Lonely Boyson Friday and Bright Light Social Hour on Saturday. Get pumped up for the ride over to your friendly neighborhood newspaper with those bands’ adrenaline-pumping songs “Can’t Slow Down” and “Bare Hands Bare Feet.”
Other ballads to cruise to include “Ride” by Lana del Rey, “Laredo” by Band of Horses and, because we know you were waiting for us to mention it, “Free Bird” by Lynrd Skynyrd.
Put the Gillete away and buy a red bandana, weekend warrior. With this Spotify playlist, you’ll feel like a wild one in no time.
