Six Austin musicians will travel to the North by Northeast Music Festival in Toronto this month with their travel and lodging expenses covered, thanks to a new program called Music Across Borders assembled by Austin Independent Radio, the ATX Music Office and the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Making the trip are Aisha Burns of the band Balmorhea, Dana Falconberry, Carson McHone, Mrs. Glass, Jesse Moore of East Cameron Folkcore and Leo Rondeau. Each will play an official NXNE showcase, as well as an acoustic set as part of a Convention & Visitors Bureau party. The music portion of the festival, which also includes film, interactive, comedy and art components, runs June 28-22.
Several local music venues chipped in as sponsors to help cover the cost, including ABGB, the Blackheart, Banger’s, Holy Mountain, Strange Brew and the White Horse. Also sponsoring is South by Southwest, which doesn’t own NXNE but has had a long relationship with the Toronto event since it began in 1995. Additional sponsors and community donations are welcomed via the program’s gofundme.com page.
East Cameron Folkcore and Mrs. Glass will play a send-off party Thursday at 7 p.m. at Banger’s, 79 Rainey St. A final send-off event is set for June 12 at 8 p.m. at ABGB, with Burns and McHone performing.
