Thursday music picks: Free Week begins, Minor Mishap Marching Band
Free Week Begins. The annual no cover free-for-all kicks off in earnest on Jan. 2, but several shows are on the roster for the first day of 2015. At the Mohawk (912 Red River St., 9 p.m. doors), jazzy hip-hop collective Modal performs inside with rising talent Anya also on the bill. Over at Empire (606 E. Seventh St.) experimental electronica is on the bill with Satalights headlining. If you prefer your hair of the dog loud and hard, Red 7 (611 E. Seventh St., 8 p.m. doors) has a show headlined by metal band Pack of Wolves, and Holy Mountain is hosting local hard rock lifers Tia Carerra. The North Door (502 Brushy St., 10 p.m.) will also kick the new year off with a bang, as Austin Noise presents a showcase with Dromez and John Madigan.
Also: Bring the family out to Doug Sahm Hill for a 2 p.m. parade down the Hike and Bike trail with musical merry-makers the Minor Mishap Marching Band. … Count on Dale Watson to be crooning country sounds on holiday nights. He’s at the Highball for New Year’s Day. … Blues harmonica man Paul Oscher plays for no cover at 6:30 p.m. at C-Boy’s.
