Fun Fun Fun Fest gets off to slow start as gates open 45 minutes late
Fun Fun Fun Fest attendees who arrived at Auditorium Shores and Butler Park ready to go at the scheduled 11 a.m. opening time ended up with a bit of a wait, as the gates didn’t open until 11:45 a.m.
“We were just putting the finishing touches on things,” said Bobby Garza, general manager of Transmission Events, which runs the festival. “The rain put us a little behind,” he added, referring to the slow, steady two days of precipitation that finally abated Thursday morning but left the grounds requiring some additional preparation work.
A quick tour of the site indicated minor muddy spots, but most stage areas seemed to be in decent to good shape.
A couple of acts had start times that ended up being before the gates finally opened. Hometown hardcore punkers Breakout started their set on the Black Stage at 11:40 a.m. as scheduled, even as attendees still stood in line outside the fence.
Asked whether set times would be adjusted to accommodate any bands affected by the late opening, Garza said that the decision would be up to individual stage managers. On the Black Stage, Breakout had wrapped up their set by 12:05 p.m. at scheduled.
Festgoers in line seemed mostly to take the delay in stride. Chris Piercy, who drove down for the festival from Oklahoma with a friend, said the delay caused some confusion in the crowd.
“We didn’t know what was going on,” he said. “First I thought we were in the wrong line.” Piercy didn’t seem too concerned by the late start, noting that it didn’t cause him to miss any act he’d specifically come to see.
Friday night’s headliners include Judas Priest, Alt-J, 2 Chainz and Dinosaur Jr. The festival runs through Sunday. Those planning to attend, take note that the Black Stage and Blue Stage will swap spots after Friday.
