Friday music picks: Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio, Rachelle Ferrell

Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio at Bass Concert Hall McCullough Theatre. At 72, B-3 organ virtuoso Lonnie Smith (the “Dr.” is honorary) has become an elder statesman of jazz, though one who has hardly rested on his laurels. First rising to prominence in the 1960s through his work with George Benson and a string of influential records for Blue Note, Smith has continued to make albums well into his autumn years, with seven releases since 2000. One of them, intriguingly, was a tribute to Beck, while in the ’90s he issued a couple Hendrix tribute discs. He’ll play this show in a trio with guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and drummer Johnathan Blake. $36. 8 p.m. 2375 Robert Dedman Drive. texasperformingarts.org. — P.B.
