Three critics, three Top 10 lists for the best movies of 2017. We asked Joe Gross, Charles Ealy and Matt Shiverdecker to rank their favorite films of the year. Many of their picks had plots that focus on the past, whether it is the war-torn 1940s, an idyllic 1980s Italy, or the world of serious figure skating (or the European AIDS crisis) in the 1990s. Even the year’s best animated movie involved a kid investigating a mystery involving his great-grandparents.
