‘Boyhood’ grosses $1.2 million over the weekend

The “Boyhood” story is not over. Indeed, it seems to be just getting started.

The exceptionally well-reviewed movie (with a 99% rating at Metacritic) by Austin filmmaker Richard Linklater took in nearly $1.2 million over the weekend of July 18 to 20 in just 34 theaters. Considering both the number of theaters and the nearly three-hour running time, this is a jaw-dropping number.

It has also grossed $2.9 million overseas, having opened in Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom.

Twitter and Facebook have come alive with folks picking out various locations and looking for Austin color.KGSR DJ Kristen Kurtis noted that when Mason and a pal are driving in San Marcos. “the radio very clearly said 93.3 KGSR - we were playing Atlas Genius, ‘Trojans.’”

Also, Linklater confirmed in an interview with the site Hypeable that “Boyhood” would be coming to home-video boutique the Criterion Collection on DVD and Blu-ray and will come loaded with a ton of extras. No word yet on a release date.
