A film about Lizzie Velasquez

We don’t usually don’t cover Kickstarter projects in this blog because, well, we would be here all day. But we also reserve the right to ignore some of our own rules now and then.

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Velasquez is one of only three known people in the entire world who possess an extremely rare, unnamed syndrome, which prevents her from gaining weight. Lizzie’s parents were told not to expect much physical or mental advancement from their daughter. Velasquez is now 25 years old and has accomplished much.

When she was 17, Velasquez found a video on YouTube calling her “The Ugliest Woman in the World.” Anyone who has ever read YouTube comments can imagine what followed. Velasquez decied she was not going to let someone who had never met define her or scare her.

Velasquez is a graduate of Texas State University and has becomes an in-demand speaker (her TEDxAustinWomen talk has clocked more than 9 million views to date). Austin native and event producer Sara Bordo is raising $180,000 via Kickstarter to make the documentary “The Lizzie Project.” Check it out here.
