Things to do in Austin the weekend of Dec. 19-22
1. Countdown to Christmas with Robert Earl Keen and Shinyribs at ACL Live
8 p.m. Dec. 20-21. $29-$49. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com
For fans of Texas roots/country/Americana music, it’s hard to fathom a better holiday bill than this one (especially since Willie Nelson is skipping his usual New Year’s Eve shows this year). Fresh off hosting the “Austin City Limits” Hall of Fame gala at this same venue last month, Keen and his ace band will trot out his crowd-favorite singalong “Merry Christmas From the Family” and more seasonal fare, to follow what’s bound to be a high-energy opening set of yuletide feel-good, swampy soul from Shinyribs. — Peter Blackstock
2. “A Tuna Christmas” with the City Theatre
8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday through Jan. 5. $10-$25. Trinity Street Playhouse. 901 Trinity St. 512-627-9700,citytheatreaustin.org.
The City Theatre Austin brings back the hit southern comedy with two actors, 22 characters and so much holiday small-town fun that you don’t want to miss. Actors Scot Friedman and Rick Smith star in this production staged in the fictional of Tuna, Texas, where Joe Bob Lipsey has a disastrous Christmas Carol pageant, a yard-decorating contest is sabotaged and a mysterious phantom is on the loose and spreading havoc.
