Art

Co-Lab Projects. In "Ebony Reprinted," artist Dana Robinson translates images from vintage Ebony magazine ads and editorial pieces into paint, smearing, pressing and texturing it so that the human beings at the center of the manipulative images become at once more abstract and exponentially more present. She says in an artist statement that "the visual results and the feelings they invoke are unpredictable, and there is no reliable formula for their creation." 12 to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday through June 29. Springdale General, 1023 Springdale Road 1B. co-labprojects.org

Music

Jamila Woods at Barracuda. On her new album “Legacy! Legacy!” Woods inhabits the lives of artists, activists and cultural instigators whom she considers heroes. She fights to own her sexuality as Betty Davis, builds on the gut-wrenching message of a Sonia Sanchez poem about slavery and explores musical adventurer Sun Ra’s cosmic jazz universe. In the process, she weaves political and personal into a powerful work that emphasizes the relevance of these past leaders’ messages in modern America. $15-$55. 7 p.m. doors June 11. 611 E. Seventh St. barracudaaustin.com — Deborah Sengupta Stith

Books

Chez Zee Author Series: Wyatt McSpadden. In "Texas BBQ: Small Town to Downtown," photographer McSpadden has immortalized the barbecue joints of rural Texas in richly authentic, crave-inducing images. Accompanying the images are barbecue reflections by James Beard Award-winning pitmaster Aaron Franklin and Texas Monthly’s barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn, but at the Tuesday author appearance, you'll just hear from McSpadden. Event admission includes appetizers, dessert bites, tea, coffee and a cash bar. 6 p.m. doors June 11. $22-$55. 5406 Balcones Drive. eventbrite.com/e/chez-zee-author-series-june-11th-with-wyatt-mcspadden-texas-bbq-small-town-to-downtown-tickets-54712468466.
