Tuesday provides a mix of free SXSW events and more

1. "Arctic Passage" at the Harry Ransom Center

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 12. Free. HRC Plaza, 300 W. 21st St.

Award-winning photographer and documentary filmmaker Louie Palu will install a series of photographs frozen in large ice blocks on the Ransom Center's plaza. The photographs were made in the high Arctic over the course of three years while Palu was on assignment for National Geographic. He'll give a talk at the center at 4 p.m. to explore the installation, which is part of the South by Southwest art program. A SXSW badge is not needed to attend.

2. Texas Meets the Tropics at the Central Market Cooking School

6:30 p.m. March 12. $70. 4001 N. Lamar Blvd.

While you're learning how to cook some of the best food items our state has to offer, a representative from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will be on hand to discuss game management, fishing, hunting and the great outdoors. You'll divide into teams and perfect your techniques as you create tropical dishes that feature wild boar and crustaceans from the Gulf of Mexico. These include coconut shrimp with lime and harina con cangrejo (creamy Cuban cornmeal porridge).

3. Sun Radio Morning Sessions during South by Southwest

8 a.m. to 11 a.m. March 12-15 at Shady Grove, 1624 Barton Springs Road. $15 donation to the Sun Radio Foundation each day will get you in.

The local radio station will host four days of live broadcast sessions with a lineup that includes the Strumbellas, Hayes Carll, Flora Cash, Kelly Willis, the Band Of Heathens, Shinyribs, Jamie Lin Wilson, Carson McHone, Walker Lukens, Matthew Logan Vasque and Pat Byrne. Arrive early; entry is not guaranteed.

4. SXSW Music Showcases at Scholz Garten

5 p.m. March 12, 2 p.m. March 13 and 16, noon March 14-15. Free. 1607 San Jacinto Blvd.

America’s longest-running biergarten has become the newest place to host label showcases at South by Southwest this year. For the first time, Scholz Garten will offer five days of free live music provided by various record labels at the festival. No wristbands are required to attend. The Scholz Kick-off Party on Tuesday starts the festivities, which will feature food and drinks each day in addition to the tunes. Head to the Facebook link for the full schedule.
