Christmas comes to Austin with these events
1. Carson McHone’s sixth annual Christmas Eve Songwriter Special at White Horse
8 p.m. Dec. 24. Donations accepted for the SIMS Foundation. 500 Comal St. thewhitehorseaustin.com.
It’s a family affair on a special night, as native Austinite McHone’s father is part-owner of this popular East Side country dance hot spot. Every year, Carson — whose latest release just landed in Rolling Stone's list of 2018's top 40 country albums — coordinates a massive list of more than two dozen local musicians playing two songs each. Among those on board to perform this year are Johnny Nicholas, John Evans, Ali Holder, Mike Schoenfeld, Elsa Cross and Doug Strahan. Music runs beyond midnight, into the first couple hours of Christmas morning. — Peter Blackstock

The final of a trio of festive feasts features South American fare that includes causa with crabmeat filling, which is a versatile Peruvian potato dish. There will also be savory roast pork, lucuma ice cream and more Peruvian delights. Plus, each course is paired with cocktails, wine and coffee, including Peru's signature drink, the Pisco Sour, with Barsol Pisco, lime, egg white and orange créme bitters.
3. Home for the Holidays: "It's a Wonderful Life" at AFS Cinema
7 p.m. Dec. 25. $11.25. 6406 N. Interstate 35 Ste. 3100. austinfilm.org.
Close out your Christmas by counting your blessings. There's a reason the Frank Capra classic starring Jimmy Stewart has become a holiday season tradition — it is an honest film full of deep, real emotion. Stewart is George Bailey, a good man with high values who finds himself struggling one Christmas Eve with the direction his life has gone, but he receives a little angelic assistance just in time to be grateful for what he has.
4. "A Christmas Carol" at Zach Theatre
7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 30. $30-$170. Topfer Theatre, 202 S. Lamar Blvd. 512-476-0541, zachtheatre.org.
Even after Christmas has passed, theater shows about the biggest holiday of the year continue, making sure we're let down gently. Zach Theatre's "A Christmas Carol," featuring Jaston Williams of "Greater Tuna" fame in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, has become an inspired adaptation that infuses the traditional Victorian story with a score that spans all genres and eras, thanks to three soulful ghosts and more.
5. Annual Elfie Sunshine Launch at Zilker Brewing
12 to 10 p.m. Dec. 27. Free. 1701 E. Sixth St. facebook.com/events/2101920276784801/.
Austinites can get the urban brewery’s Coffee Milk Stout year-round in cans, but once a year after Christmas, a high-octane, cocoa-containing version of the dark beer releases for a limited time. Elfie Sunshine returns with several barrel-aged variations. In January, last year’s Elfie was placed into Woodford Reserve Bourbon barrels for 11 months; in November, the resulting stouts were topped off with either coffee beans or Spokesman espresso.
6. Chris D'Elia at ACL Live
8 p.m. Dec. 28. $30-$40. 310 W. Second St. acl-live.com/calendar/chris-delia.
Close out your year with laughs. One of the most sought-after comedians in the country is taking the Austin stage with a stand-up routine that just might leave you bending over with giggles and guffaws. Chris D'Elia's stand-up tour is regularly sold out in the U.S. and Canada, but you might also know him through his starring role on the NBC Comedy series "Undateable," his weekly podcast "Congratulations with Chris D'Elia" or even a recent turn on the big screen.
