Austin musician Kullen Fox speaks about losing relatives in Sutherland Springs
Sunday’s shooting deaths in Sutherland Springs hit home for Kullen Fox, an Austin musician who has played with many local acts including Charley Crockett, Cotton Mather, Jesse Dayton, Ian Moore, Jenifer Jackson, Hilary York and Brennan Leigh & Noel McKay. Five of those who died were cousins on his mother’s side.
“It’s tough to process how an atrocity like this can actually happen, and it’s happening more frequently,” Fox said. “I don’t want to hate the person who did this but the instrument he used to carry out his evil acts. I think it’s quite possible my family members could still be alive if we had better gun laws in this country.”
Crystal Hill Holcombe, who was eight months pregnant, was a cousin of Linda Fox, Kullen’s mother. Three of Holcombe’s five children also died: Greg Hill, 13, Megan Hill, 11, and Emily Hill, 9. Her youngest daughter, Evelyn Hill, 7, survived a bullet that grazed her head, according to Linda Fox. Holcombe’s oldest son, Philip Hill, was not at the church on Sunday.
Holcombe’s second husband, John Holcombe, was wounded but survived. His parents, Bryan and Karla Holcombe, and his brother, Marc Daniel Holcombe, also were killed.
