Harry Potter-inspired yoga returns to Austin brewery in time for Halloween
It’s time to stretch into our downward dog — er, excuse me — our downward werewolf pose.
Circle Brewing, on Braker Lane in North Austin, is bringing back its understandably popular Harry Potter-inspired yoga class in honor of the Austin Beer Week that almost was. The week celebrating Austin beer, normally at the end of October through early November, was canceled this year, but that hasn’t stopped Circle from hosting some fun “Not Austin Beer Week” events.
The Pints & Poses: Magical Yoga class is on Oct. 29, when certified yoga instructor Isabel Beltran will lead participants into poses with fantastical beast and spell-inspired names.
Last year’s classes features poses like the downward werewolf, the Fluffy (formerly the three-legged pose) and the Nimbus 2000 (otherwise known as the dreaded plank). Beltran and her sister came up with the new names of each of these yoga stretches last year before the very first Harry Potter-themed class.
Neither Beltran nor Circle Brewing, owned by Judson Mulherin and Ben Sabel, her fiancé, expected the viral levels of enthusiasm for the sold-out classes last fall, despite how beloved the series remains 20 years after the first book, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” published in the late 1990s. Beltran’s Harry Potter classes received international attention thanks to a Cosmopolitan article.
This one’s on Halloween weekend, so participants are welcome to wear a costume as long as they can move in it. (So Luna Lovegood’s large lion head probably won’t work.) Any Potter-inspired accessories you might have, from Gryffindor socks to a Marauder’s Map tank top or Diagon Alley leggings — yes, these all exist — are also encouraged.
The class, running from 10:45 a.m. to noon on Oct. 29, is $15, and the ticket includes a free beer afterward in the taproom.
“Feel free to enjoy one of our Halloween casks, or any of Circle's delectable potions, after you stretch it out and get some magic flowing through your bones,” according to the information page where you can purchase the tickets. It looks they haven’t sold out yet, but given the past popularity of these classes, you probably shouldn’t delay in securing your spot.
Oh, and did we mention you’ll probably get to do yoga with a wand?
