Austin music scene benefits for Hurricane Harvey relief
This is an ongoing list of events planned by folks in the Austin music scene to provide Hurricane Harvey relief. We will be updating this list as events pass and as more events are announced.
Weds., Aug. 30: Daybreaker ATX at Wild Things. The early morning yoga and dance party hosted by Chaka and Qi from Riders Against the Storm will be donating a portion of each ticket sold to Counter Balance ATX for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. They will also be collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items, new underwear (all sizes) and toiletries to donate to shelters. 6 a.m. $20-$30. 404 Colorado St. More info.
Thurs., Aug. 31: Guy Forsyth, Carolyn Wonderland at Antone’s. Premiere Austin singer-songwriter Forsyth transformed this already-scheduled gig into a benefit show with proceeds going toward disaster relief. “This is heartbreaking and the only way to deal with something of this scale is to find a way to help,” Forsyth said in a press release. “So, this is what we do. Texans take care of their own and Carolyn Wonderland was the first person I asked. She said yes within seconds.” $10-$15. 9 p.m. doors. 305 E. 5th St. More info.
HOW TO HELP:
Fri., Sept. 1: Body Rock ATX: Kanye vs. Beyoncé at Empire. “Give back and dance!” is the theme for this installment of the monthly Body Rock party. The Body Rock crew will be donating $3 from each ticket sold to social justice organization Counter Balance ATX for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. “They’re one of the organizations taking the charge right now to step up and give the aid and the help that’s needed,” Chaka Mandla Mhambi Mpeanaji said in a Facebook live video this week. They will also be collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items, new underwear (all sizes) and toiletries to donate to shelters. For the sake of Houston, let’s go ahead and give this showdown to Queen Bey, who pledged this week to ‘help as many as she can’ in her hometown. $10. 10 p.m. 606 E. 7th St. More info.
Fri., Sept. 1: Benefit show at the Mohawk. Details are forthcoming on this shindig at one of Red River’s premiere live music clubs, but it’s being organized by a native Houstonian on the Mohawk staff under the banner of #HoustonStrong. More info.
Sun., Sept. 3: Rotel Vegas Chili Cook-off at Hotel Vegas. The Chili Cook-off hosted by El Brujo and featuring musical performances from Sailor Poon and the Sun Machine was already in the works, but now it’s a benefit for the Houston Food Bank. 9 p.m. doors. 1500 E. 6th St. More info.
