A longtime KVUE employee succumbed to cancer Tuesday night.

Executive news producer Scott Reather had been with Austin’s ABC affiliate since 1997.

He was 51 years old.

He’d previously worked at stations in Boston; Portland, Maine; Jacksonville, Fla.; and Joplin, Mo.

KVUE announced Reather’s passing on its 10 p.m. newscast Tuesday.

“For 17 years, Scott worked tirelessly behind the scenes in our newsroom making key decisions about the stories we cover,” anchor Terri Gruca told viewers. “He was a perfectionist as a copy editor … always diligent to ensure that reporters and producers were accurate, fair and balanced and that our grammar was correct.

“Scott was also a walking encyclopedia. He had such incredible knowledge of Austin. He could tell you virtually any fact about the city. Scott wasn’t born in Texas but he came to love his adopted state.

“As we remember Scott, we recall his dry wit, his sense of humor and his love of KVUE and the viewers he served. He will be sorely missed.”
