On The Record: Johnny Winter, Justin
OUT THIS WEEK
Johnny Winter, “Step Back.” Posthumous release by the legendary Beaumont-born guitarist whose late-’60s rise included regular gigs at Austin nightclubs. The disc features new collaborations with Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons, Ben Harper and others.
Justin Furstenfeld, “Songs From an Open Book.” First solo acoustic album by the frontman of noted local rock band Blue October.
Brian Pounds, “Strikes and Gutters.” Five-song EP from the singer-songwriter who competed on NBC’s “The Voice” last year. Release show 9-18 at Strange Brew.
ManChildATX, “My Mouse Finger Is Insured for $10 Million.” The latest project of Austin music scene veteran Rich Malley (Horsies, Happy Family, Kamikaze Refrigerators) includes such humorous tunes as “Peanut Butter Setback” and “Armstrong’s Doctor’s Doctor.” There’s no formal record-release show, though Malley did live-stream a solo karaoke-style performance from his own bathroom at his website last week. (Apparently that’s the new thing.)
