Antone’s MC “Sugar Bear” Black, 1950
Services for Allen “Sugar Bear” Black, longtime emcee at Antone’s who died on Sept. 12, are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1801 Pennsylvania Ave. He was 64.
Born Allen Harold Black Jr. on Aug. 31, 1950, in Bastrop, Black became a fixture in the 1970s at the legendary blues club, traditionally introducing the performers as they took the stage. He stayed with the venue through its various moves to new locations, helping to keep the Antone’s tradition alive. An owner of a local custom jewelry shop, Black also spent time on the road with blues musicians and bands that recorded for the Antone’s record label.
In addition to Saturday’s funeral, the family will host a formal visitation on Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd.
