Bakehouse closing; Strange Brew to open 24-hour cafe in the space

The Bakehouse restaurant (5404 Manchaca Rd.) will close on June 15. Owner Carl Zapffe has sold the space to South Austin Ventures, the company that owns Bakehouse neighbor Strange Brew coffee shop. The Strange Brew owners will remodel Bakehouse and convert it to a 24-hour café. The “working name” for the café is Southside Café, but South Austin Ventures president Shane Widner says they plan to have a contest in the coming weeks to name the café, with the winning participant receiving $1,000.

The café will feature a “locovorian menu with beef, chicken, pork and seafood selections, as well as a wood-fired pizza oven and 24-hour breakfast service with a low, neighborhood pricing format in keeping with the tradition of the Bakehouse,” according to Widner. The café, which should be open later this year or early next year and will feature a full bar, will also run a catering operation.

“We are extremely grateful for this opportunity and we are committed to keeping the atmosphere and pricing of our new café concept very much geared towards our neighborhood friends here in South Austin, so many of whom we’ve known for the past four years through their loyal patronage of Strange Brew,” Widner said.
