Last week hip-hop duo Run the Jewels previewed their Fun Fun Fun Fest 2014 appearance with a ballistic set at Red 7. Ten days before the group’s highly anticipated album “Run the Jewels 2″ was scheduled to drop as a free digital download El-P and Killer Mike confirmed the group’s “Meow the Jewels” side project had met its funding goal, thus leaving the rappers destined to create a remix project for the album consisting entirely of cat sounds. This was something that sounded like a really great idea to the rappers — when they were high.

“We really (expletive) ourselves with that one,” El-P told the crowd. “That might be the strongest argument against smoking weed.”

Turns out El-P, who laid his 18-year-old cat Mini Beast to rest last year, is the feline lover in the group. Killer Mike didn’t really understand the extent to which cats run the Internet until he watched the Kickstarter for “Meow the Jewels” top $50,000 in less than a day.

“I’m a dog person. I don’t want no beef, but I just didn’t know,” Mike said before the show. “But once I understood I shut up. I got with the plan. Meow. I’m gonna dress my pitbull up as a (expletive) tiger.”

According to El-P, the project will include a lot of “star-studded producers.” When he realized the project, a remix album consisting entirely of cat sounds might actually happen, he “tricked a lot of other people into doing it too,” he said.

We will be following mews of the project as it develops.
