ACL Fest 2014: Broods heralds the coming of the Lorde
New Zealand’s Broods, aka siblings-in-matching-shades Georgia and Caleb Nott, kicked off ACL Fest’s Samsung Galaxy stage for weekend two with spooky, surging pop you can dance to. Songs like “Evergreen” brought a confident polish to their 12:15 p.m. set, marked by spare beats, eerie, droning synths and big, fuzzy bass drops.
It was hard not to think they were playing John the Baptist to their countrywoman Lorde, who’s set to spread the gospel of crowdpleasing sonic shadows Sunday.
In fact, Broods’ set served as quite the pop music barometer, with a large, receptive audience matching the pair’s bodyrolling dance moves and mouthing the words to songs off their recently released album, also called “Evergreen.” Georgia, clad in a “Yuppie Scum” crop-top and high-waisted shorts, also evoked another electronic pop maven, Ellie Goulding, when she went for the big notes. She did so delightfully often — her smoky, powerful voice injected just the right amount of rasp into songs like the alt-hit “Bridges.”
Caleb, for his part, attacked his keys like a court stenographer trying to avoid going into overtime, but added the occasional vocal complement to his sister and broke out the acoustic guitar for one song that went a long way toward providing the text some texture.
With the “Royals” teen sensation teeing up the ball in the larger popular consciousness, Broods took an able, confident swing to an audience definitely in the mood for a little mystery. For their part, they seemed humbled by the love.
“We’re actually really friendly,” Georgia promised at one point. “We’d like to meet you all and give you hugs and stuff.”
