Austin’s first dedicated hip hop festival kicks off Friday night with a special edition of the city’s hottest hip-hop dance party at Empire Control Room.

Mix master Chorizo Funk will be joined by L.A.-based electronic wizard Dam Funk while Austin’s first couple of hip-hop, Riders Against the Storm, work the mic to keep the dance floor hoppin’. Meanwhile, out on the patio, the Austin Mic Exchange, Austin’s premier hip-hop open mic weekly, presents a live mixtape show.

If that’s not enough hip-hop for you, scoot across the street to Red 7, where Pushermania hosts an excellent bill of top Texas talents including Doughbeezy from Houston, A.Dd+ from Dallas and Worldwide from San Antonio. Next door at Holy Mountain, Detroit rapper Guilty Simpson headlines and Beerland will host an Austin hip-hop awards show.

On Saturday, the fest presents a pair of can’t-miss shows at Empire. Outside in the Garage L.A. underground heavyweights Dilated Peoples, who just dropped an excellent new album, headline a bill that includes hard-hitting local support from Crew 54 and LNS Crew. Inside the Control Room NYC’s Pharoahe Monch headlines alongside Jean Grae, the most vital female emcee in the game. In addition, Black Milk plays the North Door and Homeboy Sandman is at Red 7, and Grind Time Now hosts a battle at Beerland.

It won’t be all Austin City Limits Music Festival (although it will be mostly that). David Fincher’s “Gone Girl,” starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike and based on the best-selling book, also opens next Friday. The early reviews are positive, and we’ll have our take.
