Green Day to play Austin360 Amphitheater in September

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Green Day will play an arena/amphitheater-sized venue in Austin for the first time ever on Sept. 8, performing at Austin360 Amphitheater as part of a national tour announced Monday morning.

Tickets, $30-$89.50, go on sale noon Jan. 13 at Catfish & the Bottlemen, a hit at the 2016 Austin City Limits Music Festival, will open the show.

It’s the group’s first Austin show since a 2013 South by Southwest set at ACL Live. (Green Day’s side-project garage band, Foxboro Hot Tubs, played Rachael Ray’s party at Stubb’s during SXSW 2014.) In November 2011, the band played a secret show at Red River nightclub Red 7 (now Barracuda), one of a handful of surprise small-venue shows around the country where they tried out new material.

Earlier in its career, the group played Austin venues including Liberty Lunch, Austin Music Hall, the original Emo’s, and the Back Room (where the current Emo’s now stands). The Bay Area punk-pop group is touring behind its 2016 album “Revolution Radio,” which hit No. 1 upon its release in October.
