This week’s free fun is overtaken with holiday events, but there are plenty of chances to take a break from the festive nature of the month.

Driskill Tree Lighting

Tuesday, 6-7 p.m.  Choral performances and seasonal music from the Arundel Ensemble String Quartet will entertain audiences during the annual tree lighting ceremony in Austin’s oldest running hotel (604 Brazos St).

Gingerbread Village Open House

Tuesday and Wednesday, 5-6 p.m. Enjoy complimentary hot apple cider and festive cookies while admiring the “Candy Land”-themed gingerbread houses in the lobby of the Four Seasons hotel (98 San Jacinto Blvd). The hotel’s pastry chefs and special guest Santa Claus will be on hand for photo opportunities. The houses will be on display until Dec. 31.

Texas Radio Live

Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. A weekly fundraiser for the KDRP Radio Mission, this live music series features a new Texas musician every Wednesday at Guero’s Oak Garden (1412 S Congress Ave). This week’s performers are Chip Dolan and Shawn Nelson.

Loudmouth Rentals Grand Opening

Thursday, 6-8 p.m. Austin’s newest sound equipment and music instrument rental company opens with a live music bash headlined by Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Gina Chavez. Complimentary drinks and bites will be provided. The party benefits Austin non-profit Kids In A New Groove.

Wizard of Oz screening

Thursday, 7-9 p.m. The Ransom Center’s (300 W 21st St) “Films of 1939″ series concludes with the musical technicolor classic starring Judy Garland. Seating is first-come, first-served, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Attendees can enter to win a copy of the novel and soundtrack.

Deck the District

Saturday, 1-6 p.m. Since November 23, local students have worked hard to create installations of art in 2nd Street storefront windows between Colorado Street and San Antonio Street. The winner will be announced on Saturday during the event where window walkers can enjoy carolers, an appearance from Santa, and in-store specials.

Christmas in Austin Holiday Ice Show

Sunday, 6:30-8 p.m. See figure skaters, singers, and dancers bring Austin’s unique holiday traditions to life on ice at Chaparral Ice (2525 W Anderson Ln). Admission is free with a canned good donation.
