Busy Austin restaurant ranks in Top 100 in nation in sales
Does it seem like Matt’s El Rancho is always crowded? There’s a good reason for that.
We’ve told you before that Matt’s El Rancho sells a lot of alcohol (try more than $500,000 in May alone), but they also serve a ton of food.
The legendary Tex-Mex restaurant in South Austin landed on industry publication Restaurant Business’s list of highest-grossing independent restaurants in the country. The publication used their estimate of 2018 sales to rank Matt’s 85th in the country, making it the only restaurant in Texas to make the list.
The site reports that Matt’s sold more than $13 million in food and drink last year. The raw sales numbers alone are impressive, but when you break down the sales by the estimated number of meals, it’s even more eye popping. Matt’s ranks 11th on the list of total meals served, coming in right around 525,00 meals. And it did so with less square footage, about an estimated 10,000, than all but two restaurants that served more meals (Found Fathers in D.C. and Timberline Steaks and Grille in Denver). What does that mean? Your eyes don’t lie. Matt’s El Rancho is often busy and crowded and turns over tables at a rate faster than steakhouses and fine dining establishments. Here’s to fajitas and margaritas forever.
Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami Beach topped the list at more than $38 million in sales, with Carmine’s in Times Square coming in a close second around $37 million. As one would expect, the list is dominated by NYC restaurants and steakhouses, with more than 20 percent of the entries coming from NYC.
