Elgin bbq legend Southside Market opens this weekend in Austin
The city is getting yet another smoky taste of the country. Famed smokehouse Southside Market & Barbeque of Elgin opens its first Austin location Sunday at the Shops at Arbor Walk at 10515 N. Mopac, Suite B-225.
The Austin location, operated by the owners of the original, will serve lunch and dinner daily and also operate a market selling fresh and fully smoked meats.
William Moon started Southside Market in Elgin in 1882, and the market and restaurant, best known for its succulent hot guts sausage that you can find sold elsewhere in the state, was eventually purchased by Ernest and Adrene Bracewell in 1968. They moved Southside to its current location on US 290 in 1991, where it is operated by their grandson, third-generation pitmaster Bryan Bracewell, and his wife, Rachel. With roots stretching back to 1882, Southside bills itself as the state’s oldest barbecue operation.
The Austin location won’t be the first extension of the brand. The Bracewells opened a Bastrop location on Texas 71 in 2014.
Southside will also open a Hutto outpost in the town’s Co-Op District in the spring.
Southside Market in Austin will be open 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
