More change at Lamar Union, as Artista Rosso closes

The face of Lamar Union on South Lamar Boulevard seems to be in regular flux, and stands as a symbol of the difficulty hospitality operators have in making long-term homes in mixed-use developments away from downtown.

Market, cafe and wine bar Artista Rosso closed recently after less than a year and a half in business in the complex that is most known for housing the Alamo Drafthouse.

Artista Rosso took the place of fellow upscale market Delicious and saw a similar fate. The owners, who also own Barley Bean, earlier this year opened Connection Pizza + Bar in the space across from the Alamo formerly occupied by Vox Table. The Vox Owners also briefly operated Tex-Mex restaurant El Burro in the same space inhabited by the lightly trafficked Mandala Vietnamese and Thai restaurant, which sits across from Soto, the sushi restaurant that took the place of Cantine and just celebrated its two-year anniversary in the mixed-use complex. Feeling dizzy yet? If you need your bearings, Shake Shack continues to operate on the corner, though with smaller lines than those for which the massively popular chain is known elsewhere, and TLC, the seafood restaurant and bar has been open since December 2017.
