Six Central Texas barbecue restaurants land on Texas Monthly's Top 25

Texas Monthly barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn this week released his list of the 25 best new restaurants in the state. The bi-annual list runs staggered with the magazine’s famous every-four-year project that names the Top 50 in the state. This year’s list of 25 was populated by quite a few places that are taking an unconventional approach to Texas barbecue, delivering dishes that stretch beyond the holy trinity of brisket, ribs and sausage.

The list of honorees includes six Central Texas spots: Loro, the Asian smokehouse from chefs Tyson Cole and Aaron Franklin on South Lamar; LeRoy & Lewis, the trailer in South Austin that makes items like smoked beef cheeks and mac-and-cheese-stuffed quail; The Switch, the Stiles Switch offshoot near Dripping Springs that features boudin on its menu; John Mueller Black Box Barbecue, the traditionalist trailer in Georgetown from living legend and grandson of Louie Mueller; the monster sandwich creators at Brotherton's Black Iron Barbecue in Pflugerville; and the lesser known Pustka Family Barbeque in Hutto.
