Deli from Mum Foods opening on old Eastside Cafe property
The makers of some of the best pastrami in Austin are getting a (semi)-permanent address. Farmers market staple Mum Foods will set up a deli operating out of the old Elaine’s Pork and Pies space on the former Eastside Cafe property at 2113 Manor Road. Mum has made a name for itself selling its cured and smoked meat at the farmer’s market up till now (Daniel Vaughn of Texas Monthly called it the best pastrami in the state), but soon people will be able to order sandwiches in the small space on the northeast corner of the former Eastside lot. Suerte owner Sam Hellman-Mass bought the property last year, and though he has not announced the concept for his forthcoming restaurant where Eastside once stood, he has come to an agreement to lease the Elaine’s space to Matti Bills and Geoff Ellis as a temporary home for Mum. The deli is expected to open in late April.
“I thought Mum Foods would be a great fit to bring some delicious food and a really fun energy to the smaller building until we are ready to start construction on our new project,” Hellman-Mass said. “Matti and Geoff are amazing at what they do and they care about the community and where their food comes from. Not to mention, their pastrami is hands-down the best I’ve ever had.”
The housemade meats from Mum will be served on sourdough bread made with locally grown and milled grains from Barton Springs Mill. and baked by Alex Manley of Swedish Hill. The deli will also serve an assortment of pastries from pastry chef Madison Collins.
“We are honored to be continuing the legacy of sustainable ingredients that was started by Elaine and continued on by people like Sam,” Ellis said. “Along with many of our neighbors, we recognize the significance of Eastside Cafe and Elaine’s Pork & Pie Shop in the farm-to-table movement in Austin, and see it as perfectly aligned with the direction we want to take Mum Foods. We can’t thank Sam enough for this amazing opportunity and we are really excited to share our food with Austinites in a new way.”
Mum Foods deli will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., or until sellout. Mum will continue to operate at the farmer’s market and will not be selling meat by the pound at the deli.
