Otherside Deli opens restaurant in Medical Center today

Some of the best pastrami sandwiches in Central Texas have moved inside just in time for the cold weather. Otherside Deli opened its brick-and-mortar space at 1104 W. 34th St. today. The location in the Medical Center are was previously home to Delaware Subs.

Owners Conor Mack and Derrick Smith are running limited soft-open hours (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) while they get their feet wet and will be serving a menu that changes daily, with one exception: the permanent pastrami sandwich that made their former trailer such a big hit.

In short time, their velvety pastrami, which earned a place on my Best Sandwiches in Austin list, has been their calling card. The guys trim the brisket and brine it in a mixture of pink salt and water that also includes sugar, garlic, honey, cloves, ginger, coriander, bay leaf and more, infusing the meat with aromatic depth. They then rub it with black pepper and coriander before smoking it for four to five hours (their limited space means shorter smoking times using an oven attachment) and finishing it with an overnight steam.

The owners intend to eventually greatly their trailer’s sandwich menu, which will have items like a Philly cheesesteak which nods to the former Delaware Subs, along with other hot subs like meatball and eggplant parm.

The expanded space means the guys will also have more room to get ambitious. Their deli will also serve latkes and Otherside, which has already established itself as one of the best food trailers in town, intends to take their fermentation and house-made condiments to another level, making their own mustard and sauerkraut and pickling their own peppers.
