The Carpenter Hotel in Zilker opens restaurant and cafe Friday
The new boutique Carpenter Hotel at the northeast edge of the Zilker neighborhood rolls out its two culinary centerpieces Friday when Carpenters Hall and Hot L Coffee open.
Executive chef Grae Nonas, who helped open Olamaie, says he plans to bring “fresh eyes on Texas’ past” to Carpenters Hall, much like the revamped Central Texas-meets-West Texas aesthetic of the midcentury modern space that once housed Local 1266’s Carpenters Union Hall at 400 Josephine St.
The dinner menu, which features a massive chicken schnitzel with black chimichurri and aioli, is Texan at heart and reflects German, Mediterranean and Spanish influences. Carpenters Hall is open daily for breakfast, with offerings like Spanish fried eggs with beef hash and Carolina gold rice porridge with persimmon and granola, and the lunch menu includes salads, beef and fish dishes and speaks to Nonas’ love of sandwiches, including the hotel classic, a turkey club. Carpenters Hall is open daily from 7 a.m. to midnight.
The casual Hot L Coffee is located across the lobby from Carpenters Hall and serves coffee, pastries, salads and made-to-order sandwiches. Hot L is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both operations are open to the public.
