Texas Monthly: El Paso's Desert Oak Barbecue is among best for 2021 in Top BBQ list
Texas Monthly just declared the 50 best BBQ joints for 2021 and El Paso's Desert Oak Barbecue got a nod.
The local favorite did not make the top 10, but is listed in the Best of the Rest category. Are we OK with that?
The magazine, which has previously highlighted the Eastside eatery, does point out some great qualities of Desert Oak, at 1320 N. Zaragoza Road.
"Desert Oak’s plastic utensils hint at how tender the meat is. Even though we wandered into the diminutive joint shortly before closing time and bought the last bit of the day’s brisket, the meat was still pliable and savory. But we were especially surprised by the sublime smoked sausage, the soft threads of pulled pork accompanied by a vinegary Carolina sauce, and the El Paso Stuffed Potato, slathered in butter, cheese, and sour cream and bountifully topped with beans, chives, chiles toreados, and brisket," states the article.
"The sides held their own too: we’d eat the green-chile cheese rice every day, as well as the mustard-forward potato salad. We felt a little guilty when a regular came in hoping for brisket, but he seemed perfectly happy with sausage instead," the article states.
The food truck to brick and mortar success story opened in 2015 and continually sells out of its barbecue products. The barbecue business is proudly run by pit master Richard Funk and his wife, Suzanne.
