Pinthouse, but hold the pizza? Brewpub's next Austin spot won't serve pies

One of Austin's most lauded makers of hazy, hoppy beers has a fourth location in the works, but it won't be like the previous brewpubs in a couple key ways.

Pinthouse Pizza is calling the upcoming location in South Austin, at 2201 E. Ben White Blvd., a production facility that puts the focus more than ever on the brews — and there won't be pizza. Expected to open in 2020, the new spot will have an outdoor patio, a second floor and an on-site canning line that will allow for expansion of Pinthouse's ever-growing line of canned brews, including the Electric Jellyfish Hazy IPA.

Renovation of the 29,365 sq. ft. facility, which used to be the Western-themed dance hall Dance Across Texas, is set to cost $3 million, according to an Austin Business Journal article.

Although pizza won't be on offer, other food will be. The decision to change up the concept of the fourth location came from a desire to offer a different experience for guests, according to Joe Mohrfeld, Pinthouse's director of brewing. Visitors are now used to Pinthouse Pizza as a family-oriented place with long bench tables and a range of creative pies and beers.

"With our current plan for the location, it will offer a different option for people wanting to enjoy our beer and hospitality in Austin," Mohrfeld, told the American-Statesman via email. "By having a more taproom-focused layout, we won’t disrupt the day-to-day operations and regulars who want to enjoy pizza and beer (at the other locations) when we put on larger beer-related events or can offerings."

Plus, the fourth location means that Pinthouse can increase the amount of beers that are canned and available in the marketplace both in cans and on draft. Each of the other pubs would also be able to widen what's offered on their tap walls.

"I would expect more variety and availability across the board with our offerings," Mohrfeld said.

Instead of pizza, Pinthouse number four would have shareable plates such as pretzels and salads, although nothing about the food menu has been finalized so far. The design and layout of the facility is also still in the planning stages — Pinthouse is working with local firm OPA Design Studio for the project — but it's expected to have more of a "hanging out" feel than the other brewpubs.

And if you've ever wanted to explore the brewing space and process at Pinthouse, that's going to be possible through a new tour program at the Ben White facility, according to the ABJ article.

It will be the second Pinthouse location in South Austin. The one off South Lamar Boulevard originated the recipe for Electric Jellyfish, easily the brand's most popular beer. Mohrfeld doesn't think the two pubs' proximity to each other will be an issue because not all of the locations are the same, anyway.

"If you have been in one Pinthouse, you have been in one Pinthouse," he said. "Every location we hope offers a unique experience for our guests."
