Austin's ultimate celebration of the lager returns this weekend

A lager might not have the chic status of a hazy IPA, but Austin beer lovers have enjoyed that type of beer for years thanks to the crisp, clean profile intrinsic to the style. Lagers are endlessly refreshing and thus ready-made for summer — which is why Lager Jam is always held this time of year.

The sixth annual Lager Jam returns July 27 for a full day of full pours of all types of lagers, a bottom-fermenting brew that is bewitchingly simple in flavor and strikingly difficult to make for that reason. Lager Jam, produced by Austin Beer Guide, will have 30 lagers in total from more than 20 breweries in Austin and beyond.

"Lagers are generally hype-free, but they take a lot of care and time to craft, and it's hard to hide their flaws. That's why we created Lager Jam six years ago, to shine light on great, easy-drinking beers our area breweries were making," Austin Beer Guide co-founder Josh Spradling said. "Since then, the amount of breweries and lagers being produced has only grown."

This year, Austin Beer Guide has kept the event at South Austin's Spokesman for the second year. Within the art-covered walls of the coffee and beer bar, you'll be able to try a mix of lagers, such as collaborations between Real Ale and Jester King Brewery and Pinthouse Pizza and Burial Beer Co. Plus, there will be beers from out of town, including from Dallas' Braindead Brewing, Houston's 8th Wonder Brewery and Brenham's Brazos Valley Brewery.

The event is free, with beers available a la carte, but there are a very limited number of party packs left that you can purchase ahead of time. For $30, you get three lager pours, a souvenir Lager Jam glass and a collectible Lager Jam koozie, among other things.

Consider it a boozy respite from the dog days of summer.

"Lagers are great anytime, anywhere, but we purposefully hold this in the hottest part of the year because especially now, a good lager will have you going back to grab another and another," Spradling said. "This isn't a time for samples, it's a time to jam full beers in the company of great people."

Lager Jam runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at 440 E. Saint Elmo Rd. Ste. A-2. For more information, including the full beer list, visit the Facebook event page.
