Here's your guide to pairing Austin beers with Super Bowl snacks
Craft beer paired with your Super Bowl snacks — what alcoholic beverage could be better on the night of football's biggest game?
The Super Bowl has become one of the most American excuses ever for us all to pig out on junk food. And while we're chowing down, we have to keep our whistles wet, too, right? Thankfully for us, craft beer is remarkably diverse. No matter which type of greasy, carb-heavy snack we're reaching for as the New England Patriots go head to head with the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, there will be a beer that goes with it.
Here's a guide to local beer pairings with common Super Bowl foods. All of the recommended beers come in cans that are fairly easy to find in stores.
Pizza with a lager. Look, keep it simple. Order a couple of pies from your neighborhood pizzeria and grab a six-pack of an easy-drinking lager like Hops & Grain's The One They Call Zoe. The light, crisp body of this quintessential Austin brew can balance the greasiness of the pizza, as well as the tanginess of the tomato sauce.
Buffalo wings with a pilsner. Pilsners — a type of lager — have a spicy backbone thanks to the Saaz hops that are used in classic versions of the style. Their crisp, flavorful profile makes them an ideal companion when you're consuming the Super Bowl party essential of hot wings. Jalapeño poppers with a Belgian-style wit. A hop-forward beer tends to increase the heat of spicy food. Witbiers (and wheat beers in general) are a more suitable complement thanks to the fruit and spice notes you'll find in a traditional example like the Celis White. As Austin's original craft beer, it was resurrected after more than a decade of extinction last year. And what's a more inspirational story for people rooting for the underdog team at the Super Bowl?
Cheeseburgers/sliders with a session IPA. Pair two American essentials together and be done with it. OK, but make sure the IPA is more West Coast-style rather than East Coast-style, which might be too much of a wild card. Friends & Allies' Noisy Cricket Session IPA, with flavors of citrus and honey, ought to do the trick.
Guacamole with a pale ale. Spinach artichoke dip with a blonde ale. You want a beer that won't completely overwhelm the greens in this appetizer but can still hold its own. To that end, turn to Last Stand Brewing's Saaz Blonde, a clean, lightly hopped option that is flavorful enough to stand up to the earthy artichoke.
Brownies with a porter or stout. So far, this Super Bowl feast has been mostly savory, so let's add some dessert to the table. Anything with chocolate in it is going to be decadently complementary to the rich, roasted characteristics of a stout. And if that stout has coffee in it? Even better.
