A new craft beer and music festival, Scallywag!, is headed to Austin in September
A craft beer and musical festival that had been slated to debut at the Austin360 Amphitheater in late September was canceled early this summer, but a new one is taking its place a day later.
Scallywag! Craft Beer and Music Fest is coming to the Austin360 Amphitheater on Sept. 23 and will offer more than 100 beers from local and national breweries as well as a lineup of punk rock and ska artists. Tickets to the boozy fest go on sale at 10 a.m. Aug. 3.
The bands Rancid, Bad Religion, Pennywise, the Interrupters and more will play while fest-goers sample beers from Avery Brewing, Stone Brewing, Funkwerks and others. The free beer tastings run from 1 to 4 p.m. After that, until the conclusion of the event at 9 p.m., drinks will be available for purchase. VIP ticket holders can get an early start on the tastings at noon.
Scallywag is a San Diego-born festival now in its third installment that is debuting in four additional cities across the U.S. this year, including Austin. It’s the brainchild of Synergy Global Entertainment and Brew Ha Ha Productions, which also produced the festival, Punk in Drublic, that was canceled following insensitive remarks by headlining band NOFX at a Las Vegas show on May 27, according to Billboard.
Punk in Drublic had already been pushed from May 5 to Sept. 22, changing venues from the Austin American-Statesman to the Austin360 Amphitheater. After NOFX made a couple of jokes referencing the October 2017 mass shootings at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, along the Las Vegas Strip, the Austin fest was canceled outright.
Stone Brewing, a sponsor of Punk in Drublic and maker of a beer by the same name, pulled out of the event. But the California brewery will be one of the participants at Scallywag. Brewery selection varies in each of the states where Scallywag is expanding to, including Colorado and Idaho, but Stone at the Austin event is a good bet, as it already distributes here.
September is proving to be a big month for boozy festivals in Austin: Texas Craft Brewers Fest, the biggest event focused on craft beer in the state, returns on Sept. 29 at Fiesta Gardens. VIP tickets are already sold out, but you can still purchase $30 general admission tickets.
Plus, Whiskies of the World — showcasing a wide range of Scotch, bourbon, Irish whiskey and other aged spirits — comes to Fair Market on Sept. 20.
