After Strait was named “Texan of the Year” at the 52nd annual Texas Legislative Conference at the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce Friday, March 23, Chamber board chair Robin Jeffers then dubbed the King of Country with a new title: “A Prince of the City of a Prince,” in honor of Strait’s contributions to the city.

Strait was named “Texan of the Year” for his many contributions to the state of Texas throughout his lifetime, but more specifically for his recovery efforts in the wake of hurricane Harvey last year, according to a news release.

His “Hand in Hand” Texas benefit concert and telethon last fall, featuring friends like Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert, Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen, helped directly raise over $22 million towards hurricane recovery.

Here’s what Strait, ever the gentleman, had to say about the award.

I’m so proud to have grown up in the great state of Texas and so proud to be here today to accept this unbelievable honor. Texas is a big place filled with amazingly talented, smart people. How’d I end up here?

Last year was a tough one for our great state. We’re still continuing to recover and with the help of the many loyal, kindhearted Texans, we will get these communities back on their feet again. It’s never surprising, but always amazing how in times of need, how generous the American people can be.

I’ve had a great career and always been supported by the people here in Texas. This great honor is the tip top of my list.

Strait is currently playing a residency in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena, and is about to start on a short tour this summer to other cities in the country, including a June 3 date at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.
