Mark your calendars, y’all. On Wednesday, September 6, Austin-based alternative R&B singer Mélat is set to play the Austin360 Studio Sessions stage. Known for her rich voice and signature white-blonde curls, Mélat is coming off the release of her latest album MéVen—a personalization of the word maven, or “someone who understands”—and is set to put on one of the most unique Studio Sessions sets to date. The soulful songstress is steadily gaining popularity—most notably for her new music, thoughtful insights and highly-fashionable style.
Mélat was born and raised in the Austin area— she graduated from Cedar Park High School and the University of Texas— but she maintains an international worldview thanks to her parents, who emigrated to the U.S. from Ethiopia in the 1980s, leaving their homeland to escape a brutal communist regime. As a result, Mélat embraces and embodies the musical vibes of both countries. (You could hear anything from Kool and The Gang or the Bee Gees to Tilahun Gessese or Teddy Afro in Mélat ’s house growing up).
In addition, Mélat ’s parents spoke Amharic, their native tongue, at home, and attended an Ethiopian Orthodox church every Sunday. Growing up with a clear understanding of the vast differences between life in the U.S. and in Ethiopia not only shaped Mélat as a person, but as an artist. You’ll find the footprints of Mélat’s Ethiopian heritage on her new album—the track “Negn” is sung entirely in Amharic and deals with the destructive forces at work in the world, and writing it brought Mélat to tears. And with such a unique sound and an equally unique story, this episode of Studio Sessions is a must-see for anyone who enjoys either.
