World War II vet Troy Cole recalls the beautiful and the comical

Aug. 15, 1945 — on the other side of the International Date Line in the Admiralty Islands — Troy Cole and the rest of USS Silverbell crew settled in to see a familiar movie topside.

“We’d watched ‘Gilda’ for so long, there were guys who could play parts in it,” says the Cedar Park resident who retired from a career in the Navy at the rank of chief surveyor. “There’s this part where Glenn Ford comes out on the dance floor, getting ready to smack Rita Hayworth. Everybody waits for it.”
