Free music: Sixth Annual Pride Chamber Music Concert
Austin pianist and composer Russell Reed is once again presenting a free annual concert that gay and lesbian composers and musicians as part of the Austin Chamber Music Festival.
This year’s concert — on July 17 — features music by Virgil Thomson, Aaron Copland, Ruth Anderson, Julius Eastman, Ben Weber and Thomas Adès.
“We’re going all the way from Handel arias to ’70s jazz/minimalist fusion,” says Reed. “We are also including, for the first time, an electronic piece — ‘SUM(State of the Union Message)’ by Ruth Anderson.”
Also on the program are Handel’s “Convey me to some peaceful shore” and “Where shall I fly?”; Adès’ “Darknesse Visible”; Copland’s “Nocturne”;Weber’s Fantasia (Variations); Thomson’s song cycle “Mostly About Love and “Stay on it” on by Eastman.
Featured vocalists are Liz Cass, mezzo-soprano and Philip Hill, baritone. In addition to Reed on piano, instrumentalists are Turner Partain, violin; Adam Bedell, percussion; Ricardo Chaves, saxophone;Seetha Shivaswamy, flute and Jim James.
