Bucky Lasek, who won all four X Games gold medals in Skateboard Vert last year, just squeaked into tonight’s finals on his last run in the preliminaries.

Lasek, who skated last of the 12 competitors, was fifth overall with a score of 81. The top six qualified for the finals, which will start at 9 p.m. Each of the 12 competitors got two, 30-second runs in an attempt to qualify for the finals. The six who qualified for the finals will have three opportunities to impress the judges.

Lasek didn’t finish his first run and scored only 34 points.

Between the two qualifying runs, Lasek found a sharpie and wrote on the front of his white T-shirt: “I’m hurt, not old.” On the back, he scrawled: “Maybe I’m a little old.”

Lasek is 41.

He hurt his right elbow three weeks ago and said he didn’t start practicing again until earlier this week. The injury hurt him when he attempted the spin moves that give his tricks the degree of difficulty needed to wow the judges for bigger scores.

Pierre-Luc Gagnon was the top qualifier with a score of 87 on his first run. Jimmie Wilkins was second with 85.
