We’re lucky in Austin.

A river runs through the middle of the city, fed by a chain of upstream lakes. Beyond that, we’ve got enough creeks, small lakes and swimming holes to keep even the biggest water hound (me!) blissfully wet.

All you need to explore all that water is a kayak, canoe or standup paddleboard. But which one?

Austin Canoe and Kayak will host its sixth annual Fall Kayak Demo Days & Outdoor Exposition later this month at Hyde Park Quarry, 11400 Loop 1 (MoPac).

Organizers will have more than 90 kayaks, canoes and standup paddleboards on hand for test drives, plus educational clinics on everything from basic paddling skills to fly fishing from a kayak, loading a kayak, paddling safety and camping.

Admission is free. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 and noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 15.

Another clinic will be held Sept. 21-22 at Texas Ski Ranch, 6700 Interstate 35 North in San Marcos.
