Organizers of the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon Presented by Freescale (dang that’s a mouthful!) are unveiling a new race-within-a-race at this year’s event.

Any two people who are registered for the race can sign up for the Couples Challenge.

We’re not talking just lovey-dovey couples, either. Any pair of two friends, family members or training buddies can form a team. The teams whose combined times are the fastest in six categories - female/female, female/male or male/male in both the marathon and half marathon - win the Fastest Couple crowns.

Once you’ve registered for the marathon, it’s free to enter the Couples Challenge. Registration is open at

“For our runners, the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon is a celebration of months and months of hard work, and celebrations are always better when shared. As such, we hope all of our participants pair up and ‘share the love of running’ in our Couples Challenge,” said Race Director John Conley.

This year’s marathon is scheduled for Feb. 16.
