Lots of runs on tap this weekend

It’s practically fall (or as close as it gets to fall in Texas), and that means tons of upcoming fitness events.
I’m running the CASA Superhero run on Saturday (www.casasuperherorun.com) and the Run by the Creek on Sunday (www.runbythecreek.com).
But that’s just the tip of the running shoe. If you haven’t signed up for anything yet, consider these other upcoming events:
1. Patriot Day 5K — In 2002, Patriot Day was designated as a Day of Remembrance, honoring those killed by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. More than a decade later, many people still do not know about Patriot Day and what it means. The 2013 Patriot Day 5K will take place in 12 cities, including Los Angeles, New York City, Dallas, Atlanta, San Antonio, Detroit and Houston. Here in Texas, the race starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at Lake Pflugerville, 18216 Weiss Lane. Entry fee is $35 at www.patriotday5k.com.
2. Rogue Rescue Run - Proceeds from this 5K, Dog Jog 5K and Kids K benefit the Texas Humane Heroes, a non-profit organization that supports two pet adoption centers in Central Texas. On average, it costs $200 to prepare an animal for adoption. Help defray that cost through this run. The 5K starts at 8 a.m. Sunday at 10930 E. Crystal Falls Parkway in Leander, followed by the Dog Jog 5K at 8:15 a.m. and Kids K at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $35 for the 5K or $10 for the Kids K (increases Friday) at www.TexasHumaneHeroes.org/5k.
3. Heal Kenya - This 5K run raises money to enable Austin pediatricians to help the Kenyan town of Maai Mahiu provide basic primary care and specialty programs for local children. The 5K starts at 8 a.m. Sunday at Camp Mabry, 200 West 35th Street, followed by the Kids K at 9:30 a.m. Entry fee is $10 for the Kids K or $35 for the 5K at http://www.ctcinternational.org/HEALyeah5k.
4. car2go Marathon Relay — This one’s a biggie. Teams of two to six runners will join forces to race a full 26.2-mile marathon, broken into 4.37-mile loops. (Or run just one loop solo!) Registration is still open at www.TheMarathonRelay.com. Race starts at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at Auditorium Shores, 800 W. Riverside Drive. All fitness levels welcome. Proceeds will benefit both the Livestrong Foundation and Back On My Feet.
