Turns out Austin won’t host the 2014 Paratriathlon National Championships after all.

The event was originally scheduled for May 26, as part of the Life Time Tri CapTex. Instead, it will take place Sept. 21 in Tempe, Ariz.

That’s a bummer, because a highlight of the Austin event was watching the country’s top physically-challenged athletes cross the finish line. Austin’s own Patricia Walsh, who is blind, usually competes in the event, and she’s amazing.

USA Triathlon officials say they made the changes because the International Triathlon Union has changed its classification system for paratriathlon, and the new rules won’t debut in the United States until May 31 at the Dallas PATCO Triathlon Pan American Championships. Officials plan to have the a classification system in place before the Tempe championships.

The Life Time Tri CapTex in Austin will still host a physically challenged division, officials said.

Qualifying criteria for USA Paratriathlon Nationals will be announced once information on the classification system is set. Visit usatriathlon.org for more information on USA Paratriathlon Nationals.
