Hundreds of hairy primates will stream through the streets of the Mueller development next weekend, during the fourth annual Austin Gorilla Run.

The 5K run kicks off at 9 a.m. Jan. 25, and will start and finish at the Browning Hangar, 4550 Mueller Boulevard.

As a warmup, runners can participate in a Gorilla Pub Crawl at 5 p.m. Jan. 18 at Cedar Street Courtyard, 208 W. Fourth St. Runners in gorilla suits will trundle among downtown bars, stopping at the Austin Ale House, Fado Irish Pub, Lavaca Street Bar,TenOak Bourbon House and Lounge and The Ginger Man. Everyone gets a free Silverback Pale Ale T-shirt.

Registration for the Jan. 25 run is $99.95 for first-time adults and includes a gorilla suit to keep. Returning gorillas pay $40, but don’t get a suit. Kids entry fee is $30 with a suit or $15 without. To register go to www.austingorillarun.com. Registration and gorilla suit pickup will also be available this week at Scholz Garten, 1607 San Jacinto Street.

The run benefits the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and protection of the endangered mountain gorillas in Africa. In 1986, just 248 mountain gorillas were counted in the world. Today nearly 900 live in the wild.
