One woman’s used yoga mat is another dog’s cushy mattress. Or something like that.

Austin Kula Yoga in Tarrytown didn’t know what to do with its old yoga mats. The answer, it turns out, was right next door.

The yoga studio donated the mats to Austin Pets Alive!, a no-kill, non-profit animal shelter that works to place homeless dogs and cats with loving families. The mats will be used to cover the hard concrete floors of some of the dog kennels, and to make ramps and walkways less slick for the furry residents. (And provide just the right surface for some perfect downward dogs, perhaps?)

“I had all these old yoga mats and I’d been wondering what to do with them - I can’t just throw them away,” said studio director Nancy Boeckman.

The donation wasn’t a one-time thing. Boeckman says she’ll periodically give the studio’s used mats to the shelter. She invites the community to join her.

If you have an old yoga mat you no longer need, you can bring it to Austin Kula Yoga, 2415 Exposition Boulevard. The mat will go to the animal shelter, and you’ll get $5 off the cost of a drop-in yoga class.

“It’s something that cleans out the garage and benefits the dogs,” Boeckman said. “I thought, ‘Why not?’”
