Locally made Rocks Mai Tais a mix for any spirit

A drinks mix that was made to recreate one couple’s memorable trip to Tahiti is now starting to appear in local liquor stores and restaurants, introducing Austinites to a tropical drink that doesn’t get as much attention here as, say, the mojito or the piña colada.

When Steve and Dawn Langerock returned to the U.S., they couldn’t find mai tais on cocktail menus or good mai tai mixes in stores — so, after lots of research and experimentation, they made their own mix that they thought tasted similar to the rum-based beverages they’d sipped in Tahiti. It was supposed to be a recipe they pulled out for parties or picnics, Dawn Langerock said, but after hearing so many friends clamor for them to put the mix on the market, Rocks Mai Tais was born about 10 years after the Langerocks first started creating it.

A non-alcoholic blend of oranges, pineapples, lemons, limes, almonds and cherries, Rocks is 88 percent juice and has no high-fructose corn syrup added. It’s also a versatile mix, Steve Langerock said, that they’ve found doesn’t just go with rum. Add tequila and it’s an “island-inspired margarita”; add champagne and you have a mimosa. Rocks even works with white wine for a sangria and vodka for a martini, adding a tropical element to them they don’t normally have. (But no word yet on how it mixes with whiskey.)

Although Rocks Mai Tais launched only about six weeks ago, it’s on Twin Liquor shelves, in some Lakeway restaurants and at Iron Cactus in the Bee Caves area. Eventually, it might expand to Spec’s and a dozen other local restaurants.

“Some people are skeptical at first when they hear it’s a mix, but they’re happy to give it a try when they realize it’s so much like juice,” Steve Langerock said.

For a taste of the traditional tropical drink, the Langerocks recommend adding Myer’s Dark Rum, Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum or locally made White Hat Rum to the mai tai mix.

4 parts chilled Rocks Mai Tai mix

1 part White Hat Rum (or the rum of your choice)

Fill a glass with ice, add the Mai Tai mix and the rum, stir well and garnish with a cherry.

Island-Inspired Margarita

1 part tequila

Fill a glass with ice, add the Mai Tai mix and the tequila, stir well and garnish with a lime.
