Boozy events during SXSW

Arianna Auber

It won’t be hard to find free drinks during South by Southwest next week, particularly during the music portion of the festival starting on Wednesday, but these events center specifically around booze.

Brooklyn Countryfication, 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Grackle: New York’s Brooklyn Brewery is headed south for the day with a “strategic mix of barnyard animals, rural cookout games, beer, and Texas.” Enjoy free beer from 2 to 3 p.m.; a petting zoo will be open throughout the event. There will also be some chicken shit bingo, a tortoise versus hare race, cornhole and, of course, live music.

Lagunitas CouchTrippin’, 12 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Street Courtyard. The California brewery is bringing a special beer to Austin, along with the usual roster of favorites. Lagunitas brewed a few variations of the CouchTrippin’ Fusion Ale with bands, as well as with music and beer sites, and you can try out the Austin Fusion on Wednesday. Live music from Shakey Graves, the Mowgli’s, Allen Stone and more.

San Diego-based brewery Green Flash has a handful of SXSW events. Among them:

IPA Battle, 3 p.m. Wednesday to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Draught House. Green Flash is going to battle against three other national craft breweries in a blind taste test. Tastings flights of the participating IPAs will be available from Wednesday through March 15, when the winning beer is announced.

Kegs & Eggs Brunch, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Saturday, March 15, at Easy Tiger. Order a fried egg sandwich on one of Easy Tiger’s pain au lait bun bun with smoked ham; top it with a choice of three toppings, each created with a specific Green Flash beer in mind. (The Serrano Double Chili Stout, for example, is paired with sweet onion marmalade.)

Beer-tail Happy Hour, 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Star Bar. Try cocktails made with Green Flash beers.

SXOB at Black Sheep Lodge, 3 p.m. Thursday; SXOB at Whip In, noon Friday. Find out what special kegs Oskar Blues is bringing to town while enjoying live music from Quaker City Night Hawks and many others.

Thirsty Planet Wandering Wood Smoked Porter Release, 4 p.m. Friday, March 14, at Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew. Although this release party for the collaboration brew between Thirsty Planet and Stiles Switch isn’t technically a SXSW event, it’s going to have barbecue and beer, and who can pass that up?

BLAKKR Release Party, 12 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at ABGB. Real Ale, 3 Floyds and Surly Brewing all collaborated on an imperial black ale called Blakkr, a Norse word meaning “black” — appropriate given that the brewers who created it are all metal fans — and ABGB (which is hosting a full week of beer and live music events) is kicking off its release with a day show of six metal bands.

Texas Fest, 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 14 and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Twin Liquors Hancock Center. Meet the distillers, brewers and wine makers behind some locally made products, such as White Hat Rum, Pedernales Cellars and Twisted X, and have a taste of some of the booze. (Not a specific SXSW event.)

This is by no means a comprehensive list. If you see anything glaringly missing, please add it to the comments below.
