Farming families share their stories in new documentary short

Addie Broyles

It’s something of a national pasttime for Americans to romanticize life on the farm.

But the reality is much tougher to imagine unless you’ve spent much time on a modern working farm.

That’s just what Austin photographer Jo Ann Santangelo did over the past few years as she worked on a new documentary short called “Grow Share Prepare.”

In the short film, viewers can hear straight from the farmers behind five local farms — Ottmers Family, Simmons Family, Richardson, Mill-King and HausBar — who talk about not only how they got into farming and why they still do it, but the everyday struggles of making a living from growing food. Photos from Santangelo’s work on the farms are on permanent display at the new Sustainable Food Center, 2921 E. 17th Street.
